Meet Alyssa
Hi, my name is Alyssa Keul and I am licensed professional counselor with 15 years of experience in the field of eating disorders and body image. If you’re struggling with food and your body image, you don’t have to do this on your own.
My Approach
I often think about our issues with food and body image like an iceberg. What we see on the surface are the behaviors and symptoms, but the real work happens underneath—understanding how and why they developed in the first place.
I don’t believe anyone wakes up one day and chooses to have an eating disorder. Over time, many factors come together—biology, psychology, life experiences, and circumstances—and the disordered eating develops as a way to cope or get important needs met. In many ways, it likely helped you survive at the time. But now, it may be causing more harm than help.
Your needs are still there, and they’re still valid. Our work is about finding healthier, more sustainable ways to meet them.
I focus on both reducing eating disorder and body image symptoms and addressing what’s underneath. I’ll help keep you accountable and support you with skills and strategies to decrease behaviors like restriction, bingeing, purging, over-exercising, or laxative use. At the same time, we’ll dig deeper to understand what role the eating disorder has been playing in your life and what it’s been trying to do for you.
Common themes we explore include self-worth, perfectionism, control, boundaries, trauma, protection, communication, tolerating emotions, and much more. Together, we work toward building a life where your needs are met—without the disordered eating and weight loss running the show.
Treatment Modalities
-
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Enhanced CBT (CBT-E) to understand the relationship between thoughts, emotions, and eating disorder behaviors (restricting, bingeing, purging), and to gently work toward more flexible patterns over time.
-
Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) to explore rigid beliefs, self-criticism, and “should” thinking, helping clients develop more realistic and compassionate ways of relating to themselves
-
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to build skills in emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and mindfulness, which can reduce the intensity of urges and help manage strong feelings without judgment.
-
Motivational Interviewing (MI) to support clients in exploring their readiness for change and finding internal motivation, in a collaborative and non-pressuring way.
-
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to process past experiences and trauma that may influence current struggles with food, body image, and self-worth.
